Illicit drug markets in decline. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reports that global markets for cocaine, opiates and marijuana are holding steady or decreasing. Opium cultivation in Afghanistan, where 93 percent of the world's opium is grown, dropped by 19 percent last year. U.S. envoy for Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke also announced a new drug policy for Afghanistan, saying it will phase out funding for eradication efforts and use the money instead for drug interdiction and alternate crop programs. An estimated 28 million people worldwide remain likely to be dependent on drugs.

Substance abuse among our Troops. According to the U.S. Army, the number of Army soldiers enrolled in alcohol treatment programs has doubled since 2003. The rate is currently 11.4 per every 1,000 soldiers. Marine Corp statistics show a similar trend, with Marines screening positive for drug or alcohol problems increasing by 12 percent since 2005.

Americans saving more, spending less. Officials say households in the U.S. pushed their savings rate to the highest level in more than 15 years in May. Income from the government’s stimulus program was devoted more toward personal saving than increased spending. Rates for 30-year home loans edged up this week, remaining above record lows reached over the spring, according to mortgage company Freddie Mac.

U.S. Sen. Byrd out of hospital. The Associated Press reports West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd was released from the hospital Tuesday after battling two infections for over a month. Sen. Byrd's office says he is recuperating in his West Virginia home and expresses his thanks for their good wishes and prayers.

Bible Club appeal refused. The U.S. Supreme Court earlier this week declined to stop a school district in Washington state from blocking a group of Christian students from forming a Bible club on campus. According to the Christian Post, the high court refused to hear an appeal from the high school students who wanted to form the Truth Bible Club at Kentridge High School in Seattle nearly a decade ago. Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund had filed a petition with the court in March, asking the justices to review the case.

President Obama’s church home. Time Magazine is reporting that President Obama has made Evergreen Chapel in Camp David his primary place of worship. However, the White House is contradicting the article, saying the Obamas are still searching for a church home. “They have enjoyed worshipping at Camp David and several other congregations over the months, and will choose a church at the time that is best for their family,” Deputy Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.

There are a few things that I am going to ask you to stand in agreement with me and pray about. The first is that my nephew, Charles, will get a better paying job and that he, his wife and three children will find them a home of their own and move out of the house where they are living with his mom.

The second thing is that my husband, MICHAEL, will find SALVATION, and that my son, LEONARD MICHAEL, will return to the LORD and turn away from the ways of the world.

Last but not least-- I would greatly appreciate prayers for me and mt sister, NORMA JEAN, to be able to find a full-time job that doesn't require us to work on SUNDAYS so that we can be in church.

I KNOW THAT GOD HEARS!!

Please pray we get some good amounts of rain for our pastures very soon, so there will be grass for our cows to eat now and so there will be hay for winter feed. It's very distressing not to have anything for our cattle to eat and to think we might have to sell them all.
